THE BLACK UNICORN TAPESTRIES

This is a series of textile-based works, part of a larger exhibition where Jackson inserts herself into historical scenes of anti-Black violence and oppression, intervening in the form of the Black unicorn. The unicorn is rendered in a reflective material, a stylistic signature of the artist. The hand-stitched outline in red ribbon represents the “tear” and “suture” where the unicorn has broken through space-time to confront wrongdoing and render aid to the wronged. This work was debuted at Herron Galleries in 2024.

NEGRO PELIGRO 2024
photo-printed tapestry, laser-cut mirrored acrylic | Dimensions: 34” x 52.5”

The outlier among these tapestries is “Negro Peligro,” which uses the infamous mugshot of political activist Assata Shakur and lettering in Tar Baby Code to spell out the Spanish for “Black Danger,” a double or perhaps triple entendre.
